The population of elderly seniors continues to grow, spelling an increasing demand for care. Many residential care facilities have opened and many seniors and their families find these settings ideal. You may hear homes of this sort called by many titles: adult foster homes, senior care homes, group homes, or a wide variety of similar sounding names. Labels aside, they all share a common goal: caring for senior citizens in a setting that looks and feels like a regular house.

A residential care home can deliver the deliver the best-possible living conditions for seniors. They may not want to move out of their home, but residential care homes offer a real break from the hospital-like setting that typifies many assisted living facilities. In any case, these seniors understand that they require care, and a residential care center strikes the perfect accord of care and comfort. The care professionals at a senior residential care facility often provide assistance with medicine, bathing, dressing, personal grooming, and just about anything you can imagine. The intimate confines of a residential senior care home mean sites can offer very specific care. These types of care facilities provide something that those handling a chronic condition should really consider, with common focuses including memory loss, diabetes, kidney and dialysis needs. You can even find residential care homes with international distinctions. This can entail customs and languages from faraway countries. Languages and cultures will vary, but it is common to hear Spanish, Chinese, Korean, and many other dialects spoken in senior care facilities.

Senior care facilities offer more than just assistance to the ill and disabled. They also give seniors an opportunity to mingle, have fun, and sometimes learn new skills. Residents often play board games, fold laundry, make desserts, and help with dinner. Many residential care facilities also offer transportation as part of their mix of services. This may include a trip to the doctor or other appointments, running errands, or fun excursion to a senior center or even a vacation. Senior care homes often offer flexibility. If you own a pet, many will accommodate this and allow it to live with you at the care home.

Most adult care homes will charge by the month. This usually covers three meals a day, utilities, housekeeping, laundry, social activities, and sometimes transportation services. The cost of care will depend on numerous factors, with health often dictating much of the cost. The owner or operator of the care facility will make an assessment of everything and quote you with a cost before admission.

There’s nothing more empowering than using natural home remedies effectively. It has enormous WOW factor. Why? Well for a start, using natural remedies, you know you can’t do any harm as they’re gentle, non-invasive and work in harmony with your body. But the real WOW factor comes when you do good! It can be so exciting, that you can do so much good, in the comfort of your own home, without knowing much.

There are a variety of natural home remedies that you can safely use yourself, without knowing very much. There are some herbs (although many need more in depth information), there’s flower essences, there’s aromatherapy, there’s good nutrition, there’s kitchen home remedies and then there’s homeopathy.

Perhaps, out of all of them, homeopathy has the potential for doing the most good. All of the commonly available homeopathic remedies have a wide scope of use. For instance, the homeopathic remedy Arnica, the king of injury remedies can resolve the following conditions:

  • any ailment which stems from an injury, however far back including concussion, surgery, dental extractions, sprains, strains
  • jet lag
  • shift work fatigue
  • labour
  • arthritis, rheumatism
  • sepsis, infections
  • colds, flus
  • skin eruptions
  • malaria
  • whooping cough
  • pneumonia
  • gout
  • meningitis

Whilst I’m not proposing that you, as a home prescriber, attempt to treat such serious ailments as meningitis or pneumonia, I am suggesting that, with a bit of knowledge and a sharp eye, you have the potential of nipping these conditions in the bud.

Using natural home remedies does mean that you have to be a bt of a detective. You need to notice things about you or the family member you’re trying to help. For instance, you need to know their normal habits and traits, so you know when they have deviated from them. Someone who needs the homeopathic remedy Arnica is often averse to the approach of others. It’s logical when you look at it. As Arnica is the king of injury remedies, those needing it have been hurt. If they’ve been hurt once, the approach of someone may raise fears that you may further hurt them.

This isn’t a normal behaviour. So if your dog is suddenly apprehensive of your approach, he may have been injured.

I remember hearing of someone who had suffered severe gastritis for years. He’d been to see doctor after doctor, to no avail. Finally, he saw a homeopath. Homeopaths always ask about what happened to cause the problem. This was easy – a kick in the stomach from a donkey. Arnica was prescribed, and the gastritis disappeared completely.

Now if that had happened to you, with your homeopathic kit of natural home remedies, you could have prevented something like that from developing.

Lets dip into the mix and see what other examples of natural home remedies there are. Tomatoes are a popular food and can be easily grown in many climates. Tomatoes are full of a nutrient called lycopine. Lycopine is a natural sun screen. If you know some basic nutritional knowledge like this, you can eat your sunscreen – a much healthier option than the topical one.

What do you do if you’ve been stung by a plant or insect which packs a punch, and you’re in the middle of nowhere, with help miles and hours away? If you know your natural home remedies well, you’d know that if you urinate on the area, all will be quickly resolved.

Isn’t it fun!

There are a host of natural remedies on the market, but before you start trying them, it’s an idea to know what they do and what they are capable of doing.

Don’t think, for one moment, that just because the remedy is natural, that it is also harmless. Most natural remedies are powerful. You do need to know what you’re dealing with. Granted, they don’t have the severe side effects of drugs. But they’re not pussy cats either!

I’m no herbalist, but I do know that you shouldn’t use the herb pennyroyal around pregnant women, as it encourages miscarriages.

The effects of aromatherapy oils can be huge, both good and not so good, if you don’t know what you’re doing.

I know some people have suffered quite badly at the hands of chiropractors. They may have been heading that way anyway, but it does show you, you need to be aware of just how natural remedies work.

On the whole, natural remedies are healthy, do far more good than harm, can cure deep seated issues, and you can sometimes find what you’re looking for yourself. I love that aspect. I love empowering people. Learning to do it yourself may have its limits, but boy, does it make you feel good when you achieve something!

Out of all the natural remedies that I know off, I consider the flower remedies, or essences, and homeopathy to be both the most effective and with the least potential for causing harm if you don’t know what you’re doing.

I don’t use flower essences much, as their effect can take a while to happen and I’m impatient! I like to see results quickly. But then, flower essences were designed to be used by the lay person, with little knowledge. So they are brilliant in that aspect.

My all time favourite natural remedy modality is homeopathy. You can buy a kit which contains 10 – 40 home prescribing remedies and armed with the information leaflet that accompanies the kit, you can do some spectacularly good work.

The remedies in a homeopathic home prescribing kit are generally of low potency. So if you get the wrong remedy, no harm is done. Just nothing happens.

Once you’ve had a few successes, it can go to your head! You then want to do more, to learn more. One of the easiest ways of learning more is subscribing to a magazine which specialises in what you’re trying to learn. Magazines normally make things light and easy to understand, with anecdotes that tend to stick in your mind.

Much easier than labouring through a manual on natural remedies, which may be dry and uphill reading. That can come later, when you know enough to make it interesting and if you want to go still further in your knowledge.

To give you some tasters of what you can do with natural remedies:-

A mother, who had recently bought one of my homeopathic home prescribing kits, rang me up to say her daughter had a throbbing headache and was hot and feverish. I suggested she give her daughter Belladonna. A few doses and a couple of hours later, and her daughter was back to normal, eating heartily and racing around as usual.

One of my patients who had recently bought a kit, told me about when her cat had returned home one day, a bit worse for wear. It looked as if she had been bitten. A few doses of Ledum from the kit and the cat slept. When she awoke, she was back to normal, eating well. No infection resulted.

I hear stories like this all the time. And I love to hear them. I love knowing that people are taking control of their own lives and are finding out what can help them and their families.

Heartburn typically refers to the pain and burning sensation felt in the chest, just below the breastbone. Contrary to its name, the condition has nothing to do with the human heart; instead it is related to the esophagus, which is a long tube-like structure that connects mouth to the stomach. The pain and burning sensation produced by this disease is not limited to the chest only, as it often radiates to other parts like neck, throat and jaw. It is actually a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and is generally accompanied by bloating and an acidic taste in the mouth.
Causes of Heartburn
As mentioned already, the esophagus is a tube-like structure that connects the mouth and stomach. So, the food that we consume reaches the stomach through the esophagus. Once the foods reach the stomach, their backward flow towards esophagus is prevented by a circular muscle structure located at the junction of esophagus and stomach. This is known as lower esophageal sphincter or LES. But occasionally, either due to the weakness of the esophageal muscle, inherent defects in the structure of the sphincter, or build up of excess acid in the stomach, the stomach acids to flow back to the esophagus.
Our stomach has a lining or coating that protects it from the digestive or gastric acids, but such a lining is not present in the esophagus. So whenever acids from the stomach enter the esophagus, they cause inflammation of its lining resulting in this disease. The risk factors for this include consumption of highly acidic foods, caffeine, alcohol, carbonated beverages, etc. Conditions like obesity and pregnancy can put excess pressure on the stomach and thereby affect the functions of the esophageal sphincter. Diseases like scleroderma, sarcoidosis, certain medications like aspirin and ibuprofen and hiatal hernia are some other risk factors or causes of acid reflux and heartburn.
Here are some herbal remedies for acid reflux and heartburn that I’d like to share with you.
1. Artemisia Asiatica – This is a natural herb that can effectively cure your disease and reduce esophagus pain.
2. Oregano – This herb has been used in many medical uses. It has been used since ancient Greeks for healing. Many people believe that it can aid your digestive system.
3. Peppermint – You may already know that peppermint has many benefits for digestive system. Besides, your heartburn will be better because peppermint will help your body to break down the food.
Apart from the above herbs, water can also cure this condition. When you consume a lot of water every day, the PH level in your stomach will be decreased and pain will slowly disappear. In addition, there are also many herbs that you may take a look. For example, these herbs are dried grapefruits, rosemary and turmeric. Before you take any herbs, I strongly recommend you to consult with your doctors first. He or she will be able to tell you that each herb won’t harm your body. Also, eat several frequent meals, instead of two or three heavy meals, and avoid eating before bedtime if you are having frequent bouts of heartburn and acid reflux.

Alternative medicine is enjoying a boom as people start to take control of their own lives. As an alternative medical practitioner, a homeopath, I am very excited about this. When people take control of their own lives, there is no limit to what becomes possible. The limitations occur when you hand over that control to others. No one else but you, has your own best interests so much to heart.

Once you start taking control of your own life, you start to question what’s best for your family, including your pets.

You might now be asking yourself what could be the best alternative medicine for dogs.

There are many different alternative medicine modalities about and you need to do a bit of research to decide what is most appropriate. There’s homeopathy, reiki, naturopathy, Chinese medicine, osteopathy, chiropractic, flower essences, herbs, acupuncture or pressure, massage, Bowen therapy, to mention just a few. Many of these modalities will only be able to work in a limited way. For instance (and I’m no masseuse, so could be wrong), massage will probably only be good for strained muscles. And, although some can act on a deep level, they can be slow to show results, such as flower essences.

And alternative medicine for dogs, really starts with their diet. If you’re feeding your dog an unhealthy diet, it doesn’t really matter what modality of health care you use – it’s not going to bear fruit. “You are what you eat.”

Commercial dog food have few regulations and even fewer which are enforced. From the poor quality ‘meat’ by-products, to the nutritionless filler, to the dangerous preservatives, your dog is slowly being poisoned. Label claims of ‘preservative free’ or ‘natural’ are largely meaningless.

Once you start feeding your dog a wholesome and REALLY natural food, you will see huge improvements in health. Sometimes, that’s all you need.

But sometimes, you need to do more. Then you need to scour what’s available in alternative medicine for dogs.

As a homeopath, you could say I’m biased (I agree!), but out of them all, the alternative medicine for dogs I consider has the greatest breadth and depth of real healing, is homeopathy.

Homeopathy has the potential to deal with ailments as diverse as ligament damage, to heart disease, from an embedded grass seed to depression. The only areas where I consider medical services are required is the setting of a broken bone and the stitching up of extensive wounds.

I don’t know of any other alternative medicine for dogs, where all this is possible. And homeopathy addresses the cause, rather than the effect.

Lets look at that for a minute. Imagine a woman has just given birth, and has since developed haemorrhoids, or piles. Now there is a common homeopathic remedy for piles called Hamamelis. And this may well help. But it’s unlikely to cure. So you might have to keep taking it for a long time.

There’s another common homeopathic remedy called Pulsatilla. And this helps with many ailments that develop from childbirth, including piles. Taking Pulsatilla is more likely to cure them for good.

So if you can treat the cause, expect outstanding results. A permanent cure is the aim.

One of the things I love about treating animals is their desire to help in the choosing of the right remedy. Most dogs are pretty outgoing and will make it very clear when you’ve selected the right remedy – they’ll lick the bottle, their lips or your hand, they’ll sit expectantly and wag their tail, they’ll look interested and attentive.

If, on the other hand, you selected the wrong remedy, they’ll turn their head away, walk off, perhaps even snarl at you if you persist.

To me, their body language is very clear. You really don’t need to be an animal communicator.

Once you have gained a bit of an understanding of what’s available, choosing an holistic vet, for the more difficult ailments, who practices alternative medicine for dogs becomes easier, and you become involved with your dog’s treatment.

I am passionate about your right of freedom to choose. But to choose, you have to know something about the subjects you want to choose between. So you need to listen to both, or all, sides of every aspect of every junction in your life that offers you that choice. Alternative medicine for dogs gives you plenty of choice!
